Astronaut John Glenn became the first American to circle the planet on Feb. 20, 1962, flying his Friendship 7 spacecraft that was launched by an Atlas rocket. Glenn made three orbits before re-entry and splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean. NOTE: This patch was designed long after the mission flew and was never approved by the astronauts. It is presented only as a souvenir of the mission.
