Astronauts Wally Schirra, Donn Eisele and Walt Cunningham flew Apollo 7 on Oct. 11-22, 1968. Apollo's command and service modules were tested in Earth orbit. This was the only manned Apollo flight launched atop a Saturn 1B from Pad 34 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

Begun in 1960 as a follow-on to Mercury, Apollo kicked into high gear after President Kennedy set the end of the decade for the Moon landing goal. To get to the Moon required the power of a Saturn 5 rocket launched from Pads 39A and B at Kennedy Space Cener. Altogether 12 men walked on the Moon between 1969-1972.

Astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee lost their lives during a flash fire inside the Apollo 1 spacecraft as it sat atop its Saturn 1B rocket on Pad 34 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The Jan. 27, 1967 accident delayed the program, but also forced changes that likely allowed Apollo to achieve its goals.

Astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert flew Apollo 13 on April 11-17, 1970. During the misson an oxygen tank inside the service module exploded, prompting all of Odyssey's systems to be shut down. This forced the crew to use the lunar module Aquarius as a lifeboat in order to safely return to Earth.

Original Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard, the first American in space, commanded Apollo 14 with Stuart Roosa and Ed Mitchell on Jan. 31 - Feb. 9, 1971. Shepard and Mitchell flew Antares to a landing in the Fra Mauro area, where Shepard swung at a couple of golf balls. Roosa remained aboard Kitty Hawk.
