Ten manned missions flew as part of Project Gemini, which began in December 1962 as Mercury Mark II but was renamed Gemini a month later at the suggestion of NASA's Alex Nagy. Modified Air Force Titan missiles launched the astronauts from Pad 19, while Atlas rockets launched docking target vehicles from Pad 14.

Astronauts Gus Grissom and John Young make three Earth orbits on March 23, 1965, successfully testing the spacecraft systems. Grissom named the Gemini spacecraft "Molly Brown" but NASA refused to officially recognize the moniker. NOTE: This patch was designed long after the mission flew and was never approved by the astronauts. It is presented only as a souvenir of the mission.

Astronauts Gordon Cooper and Pete Conrad flew Gemini 5 on Aug. 21-29. The mission's motto as designed by the crew, which was covered over on the patches the crew wore by order of the NASA Administrator, was "Eight Days or Bust." Gemini 5 was the first spaceflight to use fuel cells to generate electricity.

Astronauts Wally Schirra and Tom Stafford flew the Gemini 6 mission Dec. 15-16, 1965. After the failure of their Agena target vehicle to reach orbit, Gemini 7 was pressed into service and launched first. Gemini 6 flew three days after a potentially catastrophic launch pad abort and went on to fly a perfect rendevous mission.

Astronauts Frank Borman and Jim Lovell spent two weeks in space, Dec. 4-18, 1965. During the marathon mission, symbolized on their patch by an Olympic torch, Gemini 7 served as a rendezvous target for the Gemini 6 spacecraft, which was launched 11 days after Gemini 7 launched. NOTE: On the official patch the crew wore, the emblem did not list the astronaut's names.

Gemini 8 Mission Patch

Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Dave Scott flew the unexpectedly shortened Gemini 8 mission March 16-17, 1966. After performing a flawless docking with an unmanned Agena target vehicle, a Gemini steering jet failed and caused a nearly fatal tumbling of the capsule. After regaining control the crew had to end their mission.

Astronauts Pete Conrad and Dick Gordon flew Gemini 11 on Sept. 12-15, 1966. The crew demonstrated the ability to rendezvous and dock with its Agena target vehicle right off the launch pad in one orbit, and then used Agena to boost their orbit to a Project Gemini record high altitude of 739 miles.

Astronauts Jim Lovell and Buzz Aldrin managed to complete several rendezvous and dockings with its Agena target vehicle, as well as demonstrate new spacewalking techniques that solved problems encountered during earlier missions.
