Astronaut Alan Shepard successfully flew Freedom 7 on a 15-minute, sub-orbital hop into the history books on May 5, 1961. Twenty days later President Kennedy committed the nation to landing on the Moon before the end of the decade. NOTE: This patch was designed long after the mission flew and was never approved by the astronauts. It is presented only as a souvenir of the mission.
