The thick walls and heavy blat doors of the Blockhouse provided protection to the launch crews. This blockhouse is similar to others here at the "Cape" including the one at neighboring Launch Complex 5/6 from which the first two manned missions launched from carrying first Alan Shepard and a few months later, Virgil "Gus" Grissom in 1961
